Positive Putting Practice

PDFPrintE-mail

Confidence has a lot to do with how well you putt.  But how do you practice confidence?  When most golfers go to the practice putting green they hit a lot of putts from 8 feet and further from the hole.  From 8 feet and out, you would be lucky to make 30% of your putts.

The next time you go to the putting green, hit 25 putts as you normally would and keep track of how many actually go in the hole.  Most golfers will find that they make less than 8 putts during this session.

From now on, let’s practice making putts, not missing them.  Your goal for any practice session on the putting green is to make at least 75% of the putts you take.  Practice those three footers until they are automatic.  Once you feel confident making three footers, move back to four feet.  You will gain confidence by making more putts and hearing your ball hit the bottom of the cup.

“So how do I practice lag putts?  Obviously I won’t be able to make 75% of putts from 30 feet, right?”  That is correct, so we will practice our lags a little differently.   Lag putting is all about distance, so here is what you do.  Stand on one side of the green and hit to the other side, trying to get your ball to stop as close to the fringe as possible without going off the green.  Doing this drill, you will find that your confidence levels stay high while your distance control gets better and better.
