No that wasn't Air Force One, just a Titleist Pro V1

Ever wonder what the difference between the Pro V1 and Pro V1x is?  The short answer that your will get from most golf shops is that the V1 is softer around the greens and not as long off the tee while the V1x is harder and a touch longer off the tee blocks.  But is that true?  And which one is right for me?

Actually the Pro V1 and Pro V1x are two golf balls that are very different and produce different results off the driver and irons.  Lets take a look:

The Pro V1 is a 3 piece ball while the V1x is a 4 piece ball.  The V1 has 392 dimples with 5 varying depths while the V1x has 332 dimples with 7 varying types of dimples in a completely different design than the V1.  Both balls use an ultra-thin urethane cover to give the ball that premium golf ball feel at impact and a little more “grab” around the greens.

You should feel a difference in the golf balls at impact with the ProV1 feeling quite a bit softer than its counterpart.  This is due to the fact that the ProV1 is a lower compression golf ball than the ProV1x.  While the ProV1x is made to be more of a distance ball, unless your swing speed is fast enough to compress the ball you may actually get more distance with the ProV1.

When the ProV1x debuted Titleist called it a specialty ball that would be good for a certain type of player.  That player would be someone with a high swing speed that hits the ball a little too high and wants a lower ball flight.  I think that the high swing speed is critical with a harder golf ball because if you can’t get the ball to compress off the clubface, you are definitely losing yards on each swing.

So if you are looking to spend $50 on a dozen rocks for your next round of golf, hopefully you are a little more aware of what you are buying.  Personally, my swing speed with my driver is right around 102-104 mph and I still feel like I get more distance with the ProV1 and a softer touch around the green (I spun one back about 20 feet yesterday!)
